Discover Civita di Bagnoregio and Orvieto, our signature Beyond Rome pairing, plus Tarquinia, Santa Severa and Vulci. Private shore itineraries shaped around your ship’s schedule.

A footbridge across a valley of pale clay. A cathedral that turns a small Umbrian city into a destination in its own right. A castle beside the sea. A day ashore from Civitavecchia can reveal a very different Italy: our first proposal is Civita di Bagnoregio with Orvieto, followed by Tarquinia, Santa Severa and Vulci for guests drawn to archaeology, coastline and countryside.

The Roma Limo Services view

  • Our signature pairing: Civita di Bagnoregio and Orvieto, when the ship’s schedule allows a full day inland.
  • Closer alternatives: Tarquinia for Etruscan history, Santa Severa for castle and coast, Vulci for archaeology and open landscapes.
  • A day shaped around you: interests, walking preferences, lunch and the time available all influence the route.
  • The return comes first: we assess the itinerary against the ship’s all-aboard time before confirming the plan.

Our signature Beyond Rome pairing

Civita di Bagnoregio & Orvieto: two hilltop worlds, one private day

For guests who have already seen Rome, or simply want a day of villages, scenery and art, this is the first route we would discuss. Civita brings the extraordinary approach across the Valle dei Calanchi; Orvieto adds the scale of its Duomo, historic streets and the pleasure of spending time in an Umbrian town.

Civita di Bagnoregio: the approach is part of the experience

Perched on its tuff hill, Civita is reached on foot across a pedestrian bridge. The view opens before you enter the village: stone houses, the bell tower and the pale, deeply cut landscape around them. Once inside, leave room for the small lanes and the square of San Donato, rather than treating the bridge as the entire visit.

Orvieto: art, atmosphere and time at the table

Orvieto brings a different rhythm. Its Gothic cathedral, with its richly worked façade and mosaics, is the natural focus; the surrounding streets invite a walk, a coffee and, when the day’s timing permits, an unhurried local lunch. We would choose the visits that matter most to you instead of trying to fit every attraction into the same stop.

Before choosing this pairing

This is a full-day proposal, subject to the actual port schedule. Civita includes a walk across the bridge and uphill sections; please tell us about any walking limitations before booking. We check disembarkation, driving, visits and a return margin together. If the day is too short, we can focus on one destination or suggest a closer alternative. The order of visits is agreed around the day’s practical conditions.

Tarquinia: Etruscan stories and medieval streets

For a cultural day closer to Civitavecchia, Tarquinia is a natural choice. Its museum and Etruscan necropolis give the visit a clear theme, while the medieval town adds streets, views and a welcome change of pace between visits.

We would build the day around the history that interests you most and the amount of walking you enjoy. Tarquinia can be the focus of the excursion, with time for lunch, rather than one hurried stop in an overfilled route.

Santa Severa: castle, sea and a gentler shore day

The setting does much of the work here: a castle beside the Tyrrhenian Sea, open horizons and the sound of the coast. Santa Severa suits guests who want a lighter day after several intensive sightseeing ports, or who prefer a coastal atmosphere to another large city.

Castle visits, a walk and a meal can be discussed around opening arrangements and your available time. It is also a useful direction to consider for a shorter port call, with the same care given to the return to the ship.

Vulci: archaeology in an open landscape

Vulci is for travelers who enjoy discovering the past in the countryside. The archaeological park combines ancient remains with the landscape of the Maremma Laziale; the walking and the setting are as much a part of the experience as the individual sites.

Give it room in the itinerary. We would discuss the walking involved, the season and the time you want to spend outdoors, then decide whether a nearby stop around Montalto di Castro adds something to the day.

Other possibilities

These are starting points, not a closed list. If you have another village, cultural visit, countryside lunch or food and wine experience in mind, tell us. We can discuss other routes across the area and assess which are compatible with your ship, disembarkation time and all-aboard deadline.

For a short call or a deliberately easy day, Civitavecchia itself and the nearby coast may be the right choice. For a pre-cruise or post-cruise journey without a same-day return to the ship, a wider itinerary through Lazio, Umbria or Tuscany can be considered.

Explore our Lazio village and landscape tours or Orvieto wine experiences for inspiration, then ask us to adapt the idea to your actual departure point and schedule.

How to choose your day beyond Rome

What draws you Direction to discuss How we shape it
Hilltop villages, art & scenery Civita di Bagnoregio & Orvieto Our signature pairing, subject to a suitable full-day port call
Etruscan history & a town visit Tarquinia Museum, necropolis and time in the medieval centre
Castle & coast Santa Severa A lighter rhythm, with visits and lunch to agree
Archaeology & countryside Vulci Time outdoors, with the walking planned in advance
A short or easy shore day Civitavecchia & nearby coast A local plan that makes good use of the time available
A personal idea or a longer journey Other bespoke possibilities Route assessed against your ship or onward travel plans

A beautiful day, with the return planned from the start

The ship’s all-aboard time is the reference point for every shore itinerary. We work backwards from it to allow for the road journey, visits, meals and a return margin; the plan may need to change if disembarkation or road conditions change.

Before buying timed admissions, agree the route with us. For practical information on port access, meeting points and planning a private service, read our Civitavecchia Cruise Port Guide 2027.
